Something must be setup different now than with the original
instructions at the beginning of the week, it would be good to know what it
is for future reference. When I originally downloaded the files, I did so
from links on the instruction web page, and got correct (binary) v0.1 files,
which I still have on my NT machine. When I go back and do the same thing
now from the v0.1 web page, I get incorrect (ascii) files that don't match
up with what I used earlier this week. Maybe for the short term, we can
manually validate the files for known attributes (use sum -r, byte length,
etc) before flashing the units.
As far as the bootloader, you probably already have a protection
mechanism on your list, but I thought I would mention this one. On the PJB,
we have a portion of flash that is only written to once when the unit is
initially built, and this portion is never overwritten with future flash
upgrades. In the event of a catastrophic problem that renders the unit
unbootable, you can boot from this region of flash by holding down a certain
button combination and reflash your unit to get back up and running.
Thanks,
Tom

Which Windows OS/browser are you running? Can you try this file
comparison on your Windows and Linux machines? My NT sum utility ( I
have
the MKSNT toolkit) produces results consistent with Linux (a miracle!),
so
you can just transfer the file and sum it on you Linux machine.
I downloaded it using netscape on alpha Tru64 UNIX. I've found your
problem: netscape on NT seems to use ascii as the default for downloading
files.
If you look at the page: ftp://ftp.handhelds.org/pub/linux/compaq/ipaq/v0.3/
you will see four places you can click to download bootldr-0000-2.6.1:
1. the icon to the left of the name, 2. the name, 3. the first icon to the
right of the name, and 4. the last icon to the right of the name.
The first two places to click are the URL:
ftp://ftp.handhelds.org/pub/linux/compaq/ipaq/v0.3/bootldr-0000-2.6.1
The third is the URL:
ftp://ftp.handhelds.org/pub/linux/compaq/ipaq/v0.3/bootldr-0000-2.6.1;type=a
The last is the URL:
ftp://ftp.handhelds.org/pub/linux/compaq/ipaq/v0.3/bootldr-0000-2.6.1;type=i
If I click on any but the last one using my netscape on NT, I get the ascii
version of the file instead of the binary one. If I click on the first two
using netscape on alpha, I get the binary one...
