Sounds like the modules and kernel are from diffrent builds, wonder
how that happened? Is there a kernel image bundled inside the root
image?
Perhaps using the kernel and modules from the working boot/root from aragorn
combined with this root fs(userland) would create a bootable system.
However I can't suggest as to weather the latesed(???) features, sleep
mode.
I'm not sure it's worth tackling, but perhaps this might make a
deascent chroot. I've started using debian and schroot on my
handheld, although I needed sd/mmc card destroying swap. Perhps I may
slip this into my next try, perhaps publishing the rootfs online.
