Support for the FTDI_SIO USB to serial converter

I have successfully downloaded h6300_gpe_image_20061206.tar.bz2 from http://www.blendo.de/index.php?id=18. I noticed that the regular site, http://aragorn.kortex.jyu.fi:8080/h6300, is currently down.

Installation went very well...thanks for all the hard work.

My goal is to establish a ppp connection from the Linux iPAQ 6315 over a wireless modem and to a Linux laptop also running pppd. The modems are built on the FTDI chipset.

I initially tried to connect the modems via the iPAQ serial port, using an adapter cable to get access to a DB-9 connection. After much pain trying to get minicom and/or pppd to recognize /dev/ttyS[0-3] on the iPAQ, I checked http://www.handhelds.org/moin/moin.cgi/HpIpaqH6315 and learned that the Bluetooth adapter is using serial-1, GSM/GPRS is using serial-2, and IrDA is using serial-3. I'm assuming this idea is not going to work.

So now I am moving on to connect the modems via the iPAQ USB port (since I have both types of modems). This is easy on the laptop, which is running Gentoo, by configuring the kernel to include Device_Drivers-->USB_Support-->USB_Serial_Converter_support-->USB_FTDI_Single_Port_Serial_Driver. Gentoo will detect the device and assign to /dev/ttyS0.

So my question is, does the current iPAQ 6315 kernel already contain support for the ftdi_sio USB to serial driver? I checked the latest CVS for Familiar and found the source under linux/kernel26/drivers/usb/serial/ftdi_sio.[ch]. But I don't know if the 6315 kernel has it.

How do I go about setting up a source tree to regenerate the 6315 kernel?

And, of course, what would be the recommended cross-development environment (Scratchbox, ...)?

I'd like to start a new porting project for the hp6945, but need some help getting started.

Thanks a million,
Larry
