OK, doing it from scratch.
Rebooted,
ifdown eth0
interface eth0 not configured
iwconfig
eth0: ... it is configured...
...making wifi work... green LED, ping works...
ifconfig eth0 down
ifdown eth0
interface eth0 not configured (still--AB)
the module still cannot be removed...
