I'm having this same problem, I'm using an iPaq h5550, and when I type
mem, I see that not all of the unit's flash or RAM memory is being
recognized (only 32M of the 48M flash, and only half of the RAM, 64M of
the 128 that's really inside).

Anyway to force the bootloader to recognize it all? Would that
alleviate the problems in restoring wince_image.gz?
