For some reason sound-modules is not installed when it should be.
Without it the alsa driver will not have the right symbols.

So I just did an 'ipkg install sound-modules' and away it went. I
suspect that the unstable opie image doesn't have that module installed
so when one upgrades it never gets added. But that is a gut feeling and
not a known fact.

Once I installed sound-modules for hh36.11 then the module loaded
correctly. I can't say that sound works, since I have other stability
problems that keep me from trying sound. But the module loads every
time now.
