When I ran into the same situation I was able to remedy the problem by
bringing up the iPAQ usb network interface first and then bring up the
host computer's usb network interface. If I set the host to bring up the
interface when the hotplug event occured it would cause my iPAQ to hang.

Do what Phil suggests, use an unstable image. If I had to compare
unstable to stable for the h5[4,5]00s, unstable is the better position.

Then go back and tru usbnet. It is extremely handy.
