usb0 on the PC should be brought up when the hotplug event happens. I
could disable that and do it by hand instead.

Nothing special about the setup. There are two built-in hubs to the PC.
I will try the /proc/kmsg trick when I get a chance to try again.
The kernel version is the latest mdk 9.2 kernel rpm (2.4.22-28 most
likely). The usb host controller is an intel 82801 ehci controller. It
is onboard the dell precision 450 which is my main desktop.
