Yes, it is unfortunately, still the case.

The OS can see the SD card (people report problems though). So you will
have to boot either off of the soldered on flash or a cf card in the
sleeve. But then you can use the SD card. Just to add a data point, I
have had good luck with the SD card using a transcend 80x 1GB card.
