Let us engage in some visualization.
Grab your virtual iPAQ in your left hand, and the power connector,
with the 2-pin-to-many-pin adapter ("dongle" henceforth) fitting
the bottom of the computer attached, in your right hand. Insert the
dongle-ified power cord into the iPAQ as you normally would.
At this point, my power light does not illuminate. I'm honestly
surprised the serial pins connect, but they do in this condition.
Now, holding the iPAQ firmly in your left hand, put your right index
finger underneath the power dongle, right where it swells up to
connect to the cylindrical power cord. Lift with moderate force,
possibly grasping it with your thumb and forefinger together, pushing
the dongle into the iPAQ a little bit. The end effect should be a
sort of twisting motion that angles the dongle in the iPAQ a little
bit.
Now, in my case, the power light comes on, and all appears happy.
Of course, I can't do this when the machine is in the cradle, and I'm
hardly going to do it for the length of time necessary to charge the
battery. It does work, though, so I know that the problem is purely
one of hardware.
Dissappointing, as the 3850 connector has never suffered anything
like this. I'm sure it was a cost-saving measure, someone figured out
how to save .7 cents on the connector resulting in this kind of lame
performance.
