The driver doesn't 'need' it. But since there are no known firmware
upgrade tools for familiar/linux it is smart to update the firmware
before turning the handheld into a useful device :). There are also
rumors that 802.11g APs don't work without the latest firmware:

Bluetooth status hasn't changed in a long time. It works for some,
doesn't work for others. Using the wlan only seems to compound the
problem:

Check w/ opie folks on the status of opiemediaplayer. But I am pretty
sure the Paul Eggleton just fixed it up. Opie was little substandard in
the 0.8.1 release. Look up the familiar release notes for fixes.
