h5400 joypad

I am having flashbacks of the way the joypad works. I seem to recall a
post that said that the joypad in the h5400 was rotated 45 degrees such
that joy1 through joy4 are actually at NW, NE, SE, SW. But I can't seem
to put my finger on the post using google.

Anyone out there want to expound on how the joypad actually works? I am
in the middle of trying to deduce it by reading h5400_asic_io.c but I am
hoping someone has actually sorted this out and can just tell me.
