It is required and there is a patch. I had sent it to the kernel-discuss
list. But I should have been smart and put together a complete set for
both kernels and cross-posted.

Here you go. This patch only applies to the 2.6 tree. Does the same
thing that the last patch did for the 2.4 tree.
