Or it is suspending, but kernel suspend might be broken in the version
of familiar you are using.

What image are you trying to flash on there? Suspend is broken for the
h5550 in the kernel that ships with familiar v0.7.2. ipkg is broken too,
consider using an unstable image from this location:
http://handhelds.org/~pb/unstable

There are familiar 0.8.0pre images here too:
http://handhelds.org/~koen/familiar-0.8pre/

But I have not tried any of them.

It could be, especially if it is low on charge and familiar is lying
about the energy level. But chances are it is a kernel bug.
