Faulty battery?

I have an h5550.

I have NOT finished installing GPE: As I say in another
post I have not yet a USB connection to the outside.

When I take the iPAQ out of the cradle, I go to
setting and choose battery info. It says 99%.
After 2 or 3 minutes the iPAQ "freezes" and
does not respond to any button.
Maybe what is happening is that the PDA goes to sleep
and I can not find a way to awaken it: I have tried
with the button at the upper right corner of the front
and at the first touch the image dims, and at the
second I lose completely the image.
The only way I have found to ressucitate it is:
a)exit the minicom on the host.
b)reset the iPAQ with the central button on the
front and introducing the stylus at the bottom right.
c)restart the minicom, and tell it to boot again.

Having a PDA that is only usable when in the cradle is
not a very exciting perspective.
I guess that the battery
is at fault (it is what they call internal battery).
I charged it the first time exactly as
ordered by the instruction sheet.
Usually, when it has been blank for only a few minutes,
when doing b) the unit vibrates and later boots. But
I left it out of the cradle for 10 hours and doing b)
resulted in no vibration: I had to leave it for one
hour on the cradle to recharge a little the battery.
After rebooting the battery info said it was at 99%
but status critical (usually it says status high).

Is the battery to blame?

  Thank you for your help.
