wlan has nothing to do with gpe - well except that gpe's wlan

The orange led doesn't work like it does in ppc - it only blinks on
activity; like the activity led on a normal nic.

you need to set the wlan card into managed mode, like this:
(if you run a network with an accesspoint, of course)

this in what I do:

---
iwconfig mode managed essid my-essid
dhcpcd wlan0
---
