It doesn't seem to matter whether I hit a button or touch the screen.
The sequence of events is:
1) 5450 is locked up.
2) I pop out the battery
3) I wait 5 seconds
4) I reinsert the battery.
5) I put it in the cradle
6) I hit the silver power on the upper right.
7) It vibrates briefly then starts to boot.
8) I get as far as the familiar login> prompt and everything freezes.

Alternatively,
1) 5450 is locked up.
2) I pop out the battery
3) I wait 5 seconds
4) I reinsert the battery
5) I hit the recessed reset button on the bottom face, right side, while
holding down the center button.
6) I release the recessed reset button
7) I release the center button
8) 5450 vibrates briefly
9) I get the boot> prompt
10) I type "boot"
11) the 5450 screen shows a bunch of text that looks like Linux is booting.
12) I get the "familiar login" prompt.
13) As I'm logging in as root, a nice app pops up that asks for a username,
password, etc. I don't touch screen or buttons.
14) Meanwhile on the serial console, I get as far as executing "ls", I see the
result, then,....
15) Everything locks up.

Any clues?

-Don
