Whilst I understand your position, you must remember that that release is
the only available option for those not skilled enough to compile and patch
from source.

It provides the necessary stepping stone. With a bit of attention, it can be
enticed to work and thus provides a teaser, a bit of education and some
motivation for people to get involved in current development.

I realise that is also generated a lot of redundant talk on the mailing
list.

So perhaps a good solution would be to build another, newer release for the
sourceforge page?
