Have you tried a USB -> RS232 adapter. Very cheap and well supported.

So my iPAQ arrived today, with it's snazzy Win-terface that I'm itching
to start working towards replacing. Unfortunately, I have no serial port
on my laptop (Dell XPS). Looking at HaRET, which appears to be how we
are booting lately, it seems that there's the possibity of connecting
via IR, which my Dell is supplied with.
What are my options here, folks? There's a wiki page for what to do if
you have no serial port, but it's unwritten.
