A prism-based 802.11b card is a safer bet.
I have a couple of Sandisk Connect+ 128MB Compact Flash cards
which I like (low price)... however they aren't the easiest to
configure (kernel compililation required?) ... google for my name
and the card :).
Better choices are certainly available... search the wiki.

Sounds like you haven't done something right.
Try disabling the getty (inittab) and the serial debug on the kernel
command line (HaRET) and then once booted start kbdd manually.
Debugging things like this *REALLY* needs an SSH console, so ensure
you have USB network to a Linux host working first.
