Hmm. I've tried this today as well, but the thermometer only fills just past
the bulb, and then everything locks up. Tried getting the start menu or the
close button, but to no avail... Previously, the thermometer filled up to
about 70% IIRC before stopping, and the OS was still alive to try again.

Weird.
