Did you load the corresponding modules on the iPAQ end? Here's what the
NFS rootfs initrd does:

insmod $MOD_PATH/kernel/drivers/usb/gadget/pxa2xx_udc.ko
insmod $MOD_PATH/kernel/drivers/usb/gadget/g_ether.ko
ifup usb0
ifup lo

I guess this should be done through hotplug scripts.

I hope can achieve the same thing with his OpenEmbedded rootfs. The USB
hotplug scripts should already be in place...
