That's right!
I haven't enabled orinoco modules yet in my .config file. If I enable
everything at once, I get a kernel panic. That's why I'm adding things
little by little.

I can do that next.

Anyway, I also didn't do that yet as the handhelds.org
/etc/pcmcia/config file uses hostap_cs instead of orinoco_cs. At least,
that was true (and perhaps needed?) in 2.4. What's the
/etc/pcmcia/config line for your wlan card?

So, you may try with hostap modules...
