Hi,

I think the iPAQ h2200 series should be usable as a standalone GNU/Linux
PDA within 1 or 2 months.

Here is the plan:

   1. Complete touchscreen calibration tuning (in progress, already
      quite usable)
   2. Implement battery monitoring (work in progress)
   3. Implement a minimum of power management to increase battery
      operating time.

Then, users will be able to format a CF card with 2 partitions:

   1. A FAT32 one, used to boot the Linux Kernel from Windows CE using
      the HaRET tool
   2. An ext2 (or jffs2) one, containing the Linux root filesystem.

Every time you reboot, you will have to start Linux from Windows CE, but
this shouldn't happen often if you charge your iPAQ every night.

Of course, this would still be a first step. The next steps to implement
would be (in no particular order):

    * Sound (play)
    * Sound (record)
    * Bluetooth
    * SD card support
    * Changing the bootloader, and store Linux and its root partition on
      the internal flash rom.

All this could take a few more weeks or months, depending on the number
of people involved in the porting project.

If this is fine for you, go ahead, buy this device and join the porting
team! First, you should start by subscribing to the h2200-port mailing list:

Cheers,

    :-)

    Michael.
