Want to see if everyone is on the same page. I know you can destroy an old
iPAQ cradle to make a serial cable. I also know that HP sells a Serial/USB
cable just like the Belkin one I have. My Belkin cable is pretty much
molded in a fashion where I don't really want to break it open to see how
it's wired up.

One thing I know about the wiring up part is the fact that I've been told
that the USB & Serial sides of the Dual cable are actually connecting to
there own sets of pins on the cradle port at the bottom of the iPAQ,
basically the bottom connector should have both ports with there individual
wires down there. The person who told me this reminded me of the Palm
m505/m515 which had both ports running thru the same pins on the bottom
connector which required a crystal or chip of some sort in the cradle to
tell the Palm to kick into USB or Serial modes.

Here is the process I went thru. I am also sorry that I mention windows so
much but I did this just "this" morning at work with the windows machine
that we have at our desks (not allowed to load a stable OS on it, Linux).
And just so you know I am a Linux guru and like using it over windows any
day just like most of you. Hope it helps.

== Begin Process==
-Started Windows XP
-Killed ActiveSync (thru Task Manager)
-Started HyperTerminal
-Told HyperTerminal correct COM port with 115,200 Baud, 8 Data, 1 Stop, NO
Parity, and Hardware Flow Control (the baud is the only default I had to
change and it took me 2 three finger salutes and a scratch on the head to
change it. It was set at 2,400 by default)
-Told HyperTerminal to connect
-Plugged in a SanDisk 128 MB CompactFlash Card & Panasonic 16 MB SD Card
-hooked Dual cable to iPAQ
-plugged SERIAL side of dual cable into computer (sometimes the active sync
client that is on the PocketPC will start to init the connection as if it
was a ActiveSync port so just ignore the continuous CLIENT line that comes
up in the terminal program. If it bugs you, you can tap the cancel button
on the connection box that pops up on the PocketPC but remember it doesn't
matter.
-Did the three finger salute (held Power, Contacts, and Reset)
-Output:
 On iPAQ=

      Serial

     (HP Logo)

       v1.08

On Terminal= Output in previous post
-Left the Serial side of dual cable plugged in computer and additionally
plugged in the USB side of the dual cable
-Output:
 On iPAQ=

        USB

     (HP Logo)

       v1.08

On Terminal (Stops excepting input from serial console & I don't have a USB
Terminal to check that side of things)=

    +SA_USB_Init
    -SA_USB_Init

-Unplugged USB side of Dual cable from computer leaving the Serial side
plugged in
-Output:
 On iPAQ=

      Serial

     (HP Logo)

       v1.08

 On Terminal=

*** Serial port was re-initialized due to unexpected problem ***

Michael!

I've mentioned this cable a couple of times before :/
Has HP part number 'n' all! (but not off top of head!)
(It wouldn't surprise me to see Targus written all over it)
This is the one I mentioned before CF and IrDA were
discussed re: booting & console ability.
I'm so glad to hear that it does actually work!
So this is the cable I should have bought rather than the
'Retractable Sync Cable' in the 'H2200 User Kit'
(also Targus branded)
(which have 3xstylii that dont fit the reset anyway!)

Nice work David!
I wonder if wiring-up a usb-socket directly to a db9m
would be successfull? If that's the case, then there
should be direct links between both serial and usb
adapters on that Targus cable (without additional chip
intelligence .. try forward & aft diode testing on each
connection:)
Can you give me matching pins from USB==>DB9M==>USB????
(and check for diode junctions?)
Thx

Marcus.

We didn't, just guessing ;)

hmmm ... password?
I think I'm liking LAB still :)
