What exact kernel are you booting? I had quite a bit of trouble when
using higher speed SD cards (133x), when the slot driver saw the card
was capable of higher speeds, it would switch modes and lose the
card altogether. Even slow cards would sometimes fail. I ended up
patching the kernel to get around it, but even now I occasionally fail
to boot.

If you look back in the archives from January 2007 you might find some
of the discussion. I'm currently playing with updating my kernel, to use
the new MMC driver in the latest 2.6 git tree. Mixed results so far, but
the SD cards are working great!
