I've built using your kernel defconfig with the same result. It's most
likely something in the toolchains. Frankly, -Os isn't enough of a win
to make it worth trying more, for me anyway.

The problem moves around when compiling for oabi versus eabi, but it
doesn't go away. I'm building complete images using OpenEmbedded
bitbake, then using the gcc-cross that gets built during this. So, you've
preinstalled a Gentoo toolchain - and you got oe builds to work? I tried
and got nowhere with that, the packaging stages always bombed on
shared library refs.
