Tim,
Keith Packard and I have hacked up ion considerably to make it more
friendly for handheld computers. We've added buttons in the titlebar
which can be configured to any ion function, as well as support for
docking applications within the titlebar.
To try out the latest ion, you'll need the ion package from Familiar's
unstable feed.
You might also want the following packages:
menu-tiny a Debian-style menu system for Familiar
gtk-menu a GTK-based menu (which docks)
xstroke which now docks
I've been told that docking clocks and power meters are on their way.
The current plan is for this to become the basic X environment for
Familiar 0.5, (of course blackbox, icewm, and others will still be
available for those that want them).

That can work, it's not nearly as stylus-friendly though. One thing I
did with that version was use ion bindings like Alt-Space and Alt-i
for vertical and horizontal splits. That way, using xstroke and a
modifier button, simple gestures split the frames.
Of course, you can still do this with the new version too.

Thanks.

Have at it. Let me know what bugs you find.
