In order to connect to your iPaq using telnet, ssh, or rlogin, you
need telnetd, sshd, or rlogind running on the iPaq, and they are not
by default.

If you stop the ppp session, you should be able to get a login prompt
from your ipaq by using cu or tip (or minicom, or any other term
emulator) to connect directly to the serial port. There's a getty
listening there.
