Problems connecting via SSH over PPP

I installed the familiar (just the basic root package) on my Ipaq 3670.
Everything worked just fine. I installed ppp on my linux box and was able
to make the ppp connection to ipaq. I was also able to ping the ipaq. But
I could NOT make any ssh, telnet, rlogin, etc connection to ipaq. The ipaq
refused all connections. Also, I did nmap against ipaq and it shows NO open
ports. Any ideas? I really would like to install some other packages. Oh
yeah, I also DID run the 'ipkg install_pending'. Thanks for any help in
