I have done that about a week ago. A few days later I removed
the X11 parts and replaced it with QPE. http://qpe.sourceforge.net

I believe you do have to have a serial cable, although some folks
are workign on getting the usb initial upload working.
If you can't wait until such a cable becomes available to you,
then there are a few home-made soldering instructions available
on the net that include everything from adding serial cable to your
exisiting usb cradle (making it a combo usb/serial cradle) all the
way to even also adding the power supply cable into the usb
cradle so the iPAQ charges off of the internal power of the usb
bus ...

One of those links is
http://ipaq.secret.org.uk/

PS: Please note, that I have not done this myself and some (all?)
of these procedures invalidate the warranty on your cradle. There
are other instructions out there that I had seen but I can't
remember where exactly.
