"I have got my new IPAQ H3660 in a state where it quickly
loads the kernel (with backlight turned off) and panics
because it cannot find the root file system."

A couple of things to try since has happened numberous times from me
switching boot kernels (I like familiar but I LOVE Intimate).

Anyway, if you are getting a VFS root panic error then most LIKELY:

1) your 'root' variable is not set in correctly in your linuxargs
2) your root filessystem is corrupted

"Uncompressing Linux....................................... done, booting
the kernel."

Now I got this before very very recently on my Intimate reiserfs file
system. When I tried to mount it - mount would seg fault - bad.

So, your console information is not complete. You say you have a root panic
error but I don't see it!

Well, first reboot while some terminal emulator is running (e.g. minicom,
hyperterminal, etc.). When the bootldr screen appears, press spacebar until
you see a boot> prompt.

Type 'set' and check your linuxargs, what is the output? It should look
like this:

'noinitrd root=/dev/mtdblock/3 init=/linuxrc console=ttySA0'

Anyway, make sure your root filesystem is setup correctly. IF this isthe
case then the next step is to reflash the filesystem.

I suggest following the directions from the above site but in short:

Type 'load root'

Send root file (e.g. task-familiar-complete-0.4) via Xmodem protocol.

Most likely one of the above procedures will fix your problem.
