I think I have some more clues as to what is going on.
I have found that if the pcmcia card is either "shutdown/ejected"
or if the ipaq is without it's sleeve then the screen does not play
up. In those two scenarios I can either let the screen blanker
switch the machine off or I can switch the power button manually
and the display does not go flickering.
After this "discovery" I have found that when the machine has
gone into this flickering screen mode, because I pressed the
power button to wake it up, after it had gone to sleep. I can
simply eject the pcmcia network card and the screen recovers.
So I guess it's not nice, but at least I don't have to resort to the
"reset" button anymore.
In other words the flickering screen appears to be the effect of the
pcmcia network card not waking up properly.
Why is this different when using QPE? The same problem did not
appear to exist when I was running the ipaq with X11? (under X11
the screen was the only thing that seemed affected by either the
"power" button or the automatic screen blanking)
