How do I install Linux

I am planning on installing Linux on my iPAQ, initially familiar and
later intimate. I have a Microdrive as well as a dual slot expansion
jacket. In addition I can borrow a 48MB flash card if it makes the
process easier.

What is the safest way to go about the installation. Should I get the
microdrive working from familiar by doing a kernel upgrade first? Any
help will be much appreciated.
