Many of your questions can be solved by simply installing the latest
Familiar release - see http://familiar.handhelds.org for instructions.
Familiar used JFFS2 - a read-write compressed filesystem in flash ROM - so
you can easily make changes to anything except the kernel, which currently
lives outside the filesystem (although that is expected to change soon).

Change then in /etc/init.d/x - since this is the file which starts your X
server, anything running under X will inherit the changes. This will not
change your settings on a serial or network login - changing /etc/profile
should do that.

You can't. The amount of RAM in your device is fixed when it's built, and
can only be changed by changing some of the chips inside :-)

If you mean changing the size of the RAMfs - you don't need to. It will
grow to accomodate all the files you want to put in it, up to available RAM.

This has been unnecessary for months now. Since Familiar uses JFFS2 (a
read-write filesystem) rather than CRAMFS (a read-only filesystem), all you
need to do is install Familiar, then you can just edit files in the
filesystem in the usual way.
