So I take it that "Unrecognized kernel image" is not a good thing when
attempting a boot. At least it is repeatable.
The attached text has the full session, probably missing the very last bit
below and the bit that said "verifying ... formatting ... done" or whatever
at the completion of the root image flash.
I checked md5's for the relevant files on my PC and they matched the
expected values.
The hardware is an iPAQ 3630 (which may be an Australian specific model
number, it has 32MB RAM).
If anyone has any tips they would be gratefully accepted.
