"Out of memory" problems and tmpfs

Hello all,

I've tried the 2.4.16 and 2.4.17 kernel packages on my
3135 and appreciate the better time keeping and the
non-volatile ram disk. Unfortunately, various
applications like rxvt, dillo, xstroke, gtk-menu and
even sometimes the whole window manager(ion) seemed to
crash spontaneously. After checking the dump of the
dmesg command, I find "Out of memory, killing ..."
messages detailing that some process(the kernel?) is
killing my X programs, apparently because it is out of
memory. I suspect this may be a side effect of having
tmpfs eat a large percentage of the 16 MB on my 3135.
The df command indicates it takes up around 8 MB.

Is tmpfs really taking up 8MB or does it automatically
resize itself to take up only as much memory as
necessary, like the old ramfs did? How do you
configure the size of tmpfs? By default, it seems to
be 8 MB.

Any help would be appreciated.

                                      Ron
