i had the same misunderstanding. some folks helped me out on irq.

actually, all the ipaq bootldr does is wait for something to come
in. it doesn't look anywhere on your desktop machine. you must
initiate the transfer from within the terminal program on the
desktop.
if you use minicom, it is ctrl-a-s, then choose xmodem, then choose
the file. when you do it the first time, you will probably get "NAK"
errors, because selecting the file takes so long. when you retry,
the file will already be selected, and you should have a good chance
to start the transfer in time without errors.
