Kernel params instructions for 0.4 potetial "bricking" [/dev/mtdblock/3]

There's a somewhat inocuous-looking change to the familiar install
recently. The instructions change the "set linuxargs" value from:

  linuxargs=noinitrd root=/dev/mtdblock3 init=/linuxrc console=ttySA0

to

  linuxargs=noinitrd root=/dev/mtdblock/3 init=/linuxrc console=ttySA0

On many kernels, this causes the buggy behavior of essentially using
"/dev/mtdblock0". In my case, I also had the unfortunate coincidence of
forgetting to do the "pflash", the combination of which has "bricked" an
iPAQ. I'm running a CVS version of 2.4.4 -- which version of the kernel
uses this new notation?

Some days, your only purpose in life is to serve as a warning to
others...
