a couple of 0.4 questions

Hi,

1. When I compile the kernel from the 0.4 CVS I get a 570K zImage.
When I try to turn off likely options to squeeze it under 512K, it
doesn't boot. How does one compile the 505K kernels on the FTP site?

2. Is it only my copy of depmod that has such a propensity to
segfault?

3. How do I get syslogd going? Is it supposed to be part of busybox?
