The latest iv package uses the new update-alternatives support in ipkg
0.9 to install a /bin/vi link. It does this with a fairly low
priority, (20 I think), so that any other better vi package can take
over the link by calling update-alternatives with a higher priority.
I agree that iv is rather painful. I think elvis-tiny will make a very
nice replacement.

The unstable feed of familiar has the latest packages. I don't think
vim is in there yet, but we would gladly accept a package from you if
you would like to make one. :) vim-tiny in Debian/arm might make a
very easy starting point, (just ipkg-deb-unbuild the .deb, remove the
cruft, then call ipkg-build and you'll have yourself a shiny new
vim-tiny.ipk).
