I think it's better than wasting another 256k, which most users have
no need for.

Did you check out the Familiar config in handhelds.org CVS:

    linux/kernel/arch/arm/def-configs/familiar

Try:
    cvs status -v someFileName

A good place to start is the root level Makefile or README.
