I don't have answer to all of you questions, but a few thoughts.
(Note that I am not running familiar on any unit, haven't even tried
it.)
There are (at least) two ways of running familiar on a handheld. You can
replace the Windows installed in rom with familiar or you can run/boot
familiar using haret. Using the haret method your iPAQ will return to
its original state (Windows) when performing a reset. All data stored in
any applications will be lost, the unit will be returned to the state
when it was new.
When developing/modifying familiar for a new unit I would use the haret
method until everything was running OK.
I believe there should be a lot of information available on the net
about this.
I also believe that you should have some experience compiling and
installing Linux on a PC before starting to make a system for a
handheld.
Building your own kernel for your PC could be a good start.
Just some thoughts.
