Beginner Questions for H3660

Hi!
I plan to upgrade an IPAQ H3660 to familiar linux (currently not
linux-driven). The documentation got me a little confused.

Somewhere in the mailing list archives it says you explicitly need a
serial cable, an usb cable won't do. According to the docs it seems as
if the methods via cf card or activesync or any other way to get the
files onto the ipaq should work too... Just get the bootloader
installation program transferred and execute it. So what's true?

Second I couldn't yet find some kind of repository for applications that
would run on it. I once had an Agenda VR3 so I have cross compiled
before. Do I have to cross compile all "3rd Party apps" (that I didn't
create and that didn't come with familiar/gpe/whatever) myself? Are
there any applications ready to cross compile or even in binary format
for the familiar distribution?

And third, but that is highly optional, how can I create some sort of
emulation environment for development purposes? I found the existing
docs in the wiki highly confusing, as they use scripts specific for
another set of openembedded distributions as far as I understand them.

Thanks for your help,
Andreas
