I have 1.4.4.4 on a mandriva 2006.0 and did:
git clone http://familiar.handhelds.org/git/familiar-build.git test-git-clone

And it reported:
Checking files out...
 100% (7429/7429) done

Have you tried Fink's git? Or just building git using your compiler?

I noticed you did not give a destination directory. Have you tried
adding that?
