Menus

Is there a standard way that we are suppose to use to add a menu item? I
have built an ipkg but need to insert a few items in the menu. I want to
create an ipkg that will set everything up easily so our clients won't have
to do much. I can probably create a program to edit the menu directly but
I don't want to deviate from any standards. I am open to any suggestions.
