The blackbox that ships with familiar uses parts of the Render X extension.

I don't think a standard build of VNC supports the new Render extension. I'm
not sure if a patch exists at all either. Since this will become an issue as
more and more software support the Render extension I would guess that the
people coding VNC will have to add support eventually. Until then you'll have
to compile your own blackbox, or steal it from Debian Arm .. OR use a
different Window manager, also best stolen from Debian Arm.
