Can't hook up to the DNS

Hello,

I am a proud new owner of an iPAQ running under the Familiar
distribution. It is hooked
up with a serial line and the installation went well until the final
point of the network
hook-up.

I log in ok with SSH. I can ping my local hosts which are in /etc/hosts.
But I am unable to
convince it to look up my DNS server for the other destinations. My
resolv.conf looks like this :
search wombats.org
nameserver 172.16.1.1
This works very well on the other machines of my network, why not on the
iPAQ ?
