Try "partition show" at the bootloader prompt and see if you have a defined
"root" partition. "root" and "kernel" are just partition names. My guess
is that you defined the root partition according to the familiar
installation instructions, but missed the step where you say "partition
save" to store the partition information in flash - which means that your
root partition was defined the first time you loaded, but disappeared once
you re-booted. If this is the case, you should be able to restore it with
something like "partition define root 0x80000 0xf80000 16" (assuming a 16
MByte flash system and a kernel partition of size 0x80000).

Subject: [Familiar] bootldr problem
I am running "bootldr-0000-2.14.8" and I installed kernel "v0.4
2.4.3-rmk2-np1" and the root
file system "v0.4 task-bootstrap.jffs2" with out any problems, on my iPAQ
3630.
I am now trying to reinstall but the bootldr no longer recognizes the
command 'load root'.
(I have no problem with 'load kernel')
Does anyone know what would cause this or a potential workaround?
Thanks
Brendan
