ipkg questions

(1) I am creating an ipk for installing a file too big to fit into the
16MB ROM.

In this case, the Java JRE 1.3.1 from blackdown.org (Why I'd want this
on an IPAQ is a separate issue for another time)

What I would like to do is install the JRE into ramfs and check for its
existence in a shell script (stored in the rom). If the JRE is no long
there, by resetting the ipaq, then the script invokes a call to reload
the ipk back over the wireless LAN. But then if the ipk is still
installed (even if the contents aren't there) wouldn't I need to
uninstall the package and then reinstall, or is there someway of
overriding the package install regardless?

Suggestions?

(2) The implementation relies upon using a 64MB RAM ipaq, as the JRE
download and the installed JRE are stretching the capacity of a 32MB device.

Question: Does the ipkg system handle decompression and installation in
the same step so that the files can be extracted to their locations
without writing the ipk archive to the filesystem first? If not, is this
possible (i.e. extracting files directly from the incoming stream)?

Thanks,

Pete.
